New Street Lights Debut on Main Street

Decorative lamps part of downtown New City renovation.

As construction crews rip up one end of Main Street in New City for the on-going downtown renovation, some finishing touches have gone up on the other end of the street.

New decorative street lights have been installed on several blocks in the area of Third Street headed north on Main Street. In addition to being decorative, the new lights are also energy-efficient, according to Clarkstown town Supervisor Alex Gormack.

"The new lights are really nice and we are getting a lot of nice comments from residents about them," said Gromack. "Now that downtown New City is starting to take shape, people are seeing what the renovation is all about."

The new street lights are part of an overall effort to make downtown New City a more pedestrian-friendly community. The on-going multi-million renovation project from Congers Road to Third Street on Main Street includes new sidewalks and revamped street parking. The project is currently focused on the area near the Rockland County Courthouse from Congers Road to around Demarest Street.

Gromack said the decorative street lights were funded in part by a $750,000 federal grant abtained with the assistance of U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Rockland and Westchester.
