October Declared National Disability Awareness Employment Month In Rockland

Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef proclaimed October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in the county to recognize the abilities, talents and contributions of individuals with disabilities and the employers that hire them.

The proclamation will be presented at a breakfast today along with honoring local employers:  Nyack Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Salvation Army, Ramapo Manor Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Super Stop & Shop in New City, Goodwill Industries Retail Store, Wendy's Restaurant in Tappan, Renotech Interiors, TJ Maxx, Morrison Dining Services, Petco, Orange and Rockland Utilities, and the Rockland Independent Living Center.  

The Salvation Army and Orange & Rockland are being presented with Regional
Awards for their hiring practices that embrace giving people with disabilities the opportunity to live up to their potential.

“We are committed to promoting diversity in the workplace to reflect our diverse community,” said Vanderhoef.  “We applaud this year’s honorees for giving people with disabilities a chance to succeed.”

Sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, the breakfast is arranged by the Rockland Employment Network, a consortium of private non-profit agencies as well as state and county agencies that work together to help people with disabilities gain employment, the New York State Education Department's Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services - Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) and the County.
