Police Make Arrest In Rockland Charity Box Burglaries

The man is accused of robbing charity boxes from a cemetery and a synagogue in Ramapo.

RAMAPO, NY — Police in Ramapo have made an arrest in a series of charity box burglaries.

The Ramapo Police Department received reports of five separate burglaries that had occurred over about three months in New Hempstead and Monsey.

On three occasions, someone entered a building on the grounds of a cemetery in New Hempstead and removed proceeds from a charity box. Someone on two occasions entered a synagogue in Monsey and committed the same offense — and police suspected it was the same person.

A suspect, a 40-year-old male from Brooklyn, was identified and located by members of the Ramapo Police Investigations Division.

The man, whom police did not name, has been charged with 5 counts of Burglary 3rd Degree (D-Felony) and 5 counts of Petit Larceny (A-Misdemeanor).

He also had an outstanding bench warrant for similar crimes in the Village of New Hempstead.

He was arraigned on all charges and released on his own recognizance for a future court date.
