UPDATE: Police Seek Public's Help in Search for Man Who Avoided Arrest

Chase led to late-night search of Congers Lake.

Police today are continuing their search for a wanted Rockland County man who avoided capture Tuesday and prompted a late-night search of Congers Lake during a a rain storm.

The Rockland County Sheriff's Department this morning is still asking that anyone who has information about 33-year-old Ignacio Gonzalez contact them at 845-638-5401, according to Patrol Division Chief Louis Falco.

Falco said the Sheriff's Department is seeking Gonzalez in connection with four warrants — two of them felonies — issued by the Rockland County Family Court in New City and Clarkstown Town Court in New City on charges including violation of an order of protection, contempt of court and drunken driving. The Sheriff's Department learned Gonzalez was playing volleyball at the Clarkstown community center at Congers Lake Park off Gilchrest Road in Congers Tuesday night and attempted to arrest him just before 8 p.m.

Falco said Gonzalez managed to avoid arrest and ran off toward nearby Congers Lake. As part of the search for Gonzalez, the Sheriff's Department called in Clarkstown police to assist them and called the Congers Fire Department to use its boat to search the waters of Congers Lake for Gonzalez.

The immediate search – which took place in a downpour – lasted about an hour, with the Sheriff's Department returning to the area throughout the night and into this morning searching for Gonzalez. Volunteer firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to check the water for Gonzalez.

Falco said Gonzalez has lived in lived in Clarkstown, Haverstraw and Spring Valley. Gonzalez is described as 5-foot-10, weighing 195 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
