UPDATE: U.N. And Museum Trips, Concert Competition Grants

At Wednesday night’s Clarkstown Board of Education meeting, the PTSA of Clarkstown High School North will present its annual Innovative Learning Grants.  PTSA President Dorothy Atzl and Vice-President Wanda Octaviano will make the presentations for six different activities designed to enhance students’ learning and opportunities. The third annual awarding of grants funds programs that were not possible because of budget cuts.

This year’s grants, which total more than $2,300, are funding:

• United Nations Trip for a Cultural Immersion Day proposed by Japanese Language Teacher Akiko Uchiyama
• Metropolitan Museum of Art trip for students studying 18^th Century painting techniques submitted by Art Teachers Meredith Rickli and Ron Wolfson
• Local college visit for SAIL (Structure Attitude Individuality Learning) students to learn about admissions and college opportunities suggested by SAIL Teacher Adam Shavitz
• Transportation cost for the Concert Band to compete in the NYSSMA Majors Festival Performance Concert requested by Band Teacher Jason Andert
• Metropolitan Museum of Art visit for SAIL students submitted by SAIL Teacher Arlene Whittaker
• Trip to Gallaudet University in Washington DC for American Sign Language (ASL) students to show them how ASL can play a role in their career choices proposed by ASL Teacher Michael Ondich

In prior years, the grants subsidized a Taiko Drumming Workshop and Anti-Bullying Program and mural painting.

The board meeting will also include a discussion of Smart Boards during its regular meeting, which begins at 8 p.m.
