United Water Customers Asked To Conserve

United Water New York is asking customers use water for essential purposes only while a critical water main is repaired. The water main, which is located outside the Lake DeForest Water Treatment Plant in West Nyack, was broken Monday morning. 

The plant went off line after a power interruption damaged a two-inch air valve on the water main. Instead of getting water from the West Nyack plant, United Water supplied customers throughout the day by from storage facilities and other supply sources.

“Our crews have determined that the repair is more complicated than originally expected,” said Michael Pointing, vice president and general manager in a statement released at 5:30 p.m. “Because it is taking longer than anticipated, we are concerned about having enough water to meet all of our customers’ needs. While we are working to restore service as quickly as possible, customers can help by cutting back on unnecessary water use such as doing laundry or running the dishwasher.” 

Pointing added that the inclement weather is also slowing the progress of the work. 

“Emergency crews will continue to work to provide uninterrupted service to our customers,” said Pointing.

Although United Water said earlier on Monday that all customers had service, some in West Nyack on Old Mill Road and Jeffrey Court complained they were without water.
