Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Three Wishes Project

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week, we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Info Session: Build Bunk Beds for Kids

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a national non-profit that builds and delivers beds to kids who don't have one. Its Rye Chapter is holding an informational meeting to recruit team members who are handy with tools, coordinate bed requests, communicate with applicants, manage volunteers, and foster relationships with community organizations.

Fall 5K Volunteers

Girls on the Run Hudson Valley is seeking volunteers to help with its fall 5K. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, hydration station, course support and cheer squads, finish line, photographers.

Date: 11/16 from 8-11 a.m.

Three Wishes Project

Many grandparents and relatives are raising children whose parents are not in the picture for a variety of reasons, and they will have to make the awful choice between paying bills and buying gifts for the kids in their care. Family Service Society of Yonkers's (FSSY) Three Wishes Project ensures that these grandparents and relative caregivers are not faced with that dilemma by providing their children with presents. Volunteers are needed to share their spirit for the season by working with staff to verify eligibility, collect and vet children's gift requests, coordinate with and pick up gifts from donor organizations, sort and organize gifts, facilitate gift pick-up, and deliver gifts to families (if needed).

After-School Academic Coaches for Student Athletes

Destination: College is looking for adult volunteers for its in-person weekly academic enrichment program at Mount Vernon High School during the school year. Volunteers select a team and day that works best for their personal schedule. Volunteer Academic Coaches work approximately for one hour a week with student athletes in small group settings to develop better comprehension skills, to think more critically, and to build rapport with caring adults. Volunteers use provided print/digital articles and media content from major news and educational sources during these sessions.

Date: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
