Vote In Wednesday's New City Library Election

Libraries are important community resources and one of the underpinnings of democracy.

To The Editor:

Because libraries have been and continue to be one the most important community resources, I urge everyone eligible to vote for Ed Kallen, George Jacobson, and Victor Berger for Library Trustees in the upcoming election on Wednesday December 12th. They have the motivation, temperament and background to refocus the board on the mission of the library.

Sadly, during the past year, through inaction and loss of focus on its mission and planning obligations, the Library Board has allowed critical vacancies in the staff that negatively impacts the operation of the library. Also, by its failure to act, grant funding for critical projects may be threatened.

As past president of Friends of the New City Library and a resident of New City from 1975 to 2012, I valued the New City Library as a resource for both business and pleasure.

During those 37 years its resources helped me find a job, entertain and educate my children, my wife and myself. The library is also the focus and venue of many cultural activities serving tots to seniors.

This valued resource was the result of the cooperative effort of the trustees and New City residents over many decades. The New City Library has been operated in the community’s interest since its inception through a cooperative board of trustees and community support until recently.

Free public libraries operated in the interest of the community are one of the underpinnings of our democracy. Among other things, it allows everyone access to print, other media and the internet free of charge.

The New City Library community has opportunity to elect 3 members who have the motivation, temperament and background to refocus the board on the mission of the library.

This Wed, Dec 12, at the New City Library from 9 AM to 9 PM to vote for Ed Kallen, George Jacobson, and Victor Berger for Library Trustees
