The Rockland County Legislature holds a special meeting at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27 to deal with year-end tax issues. Legislators will set the 2013 county tax rate required by the newly adopted budget.  Additionally, they will vote on a resolution that eliminates five positions.  Even though the budget becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2013 the positions will not be abolished until the end of business on February 22.

The five positions within the county health department are Senior Public Health Nurse, Registered Nurse – Community Health, Public Health Social Worker II, Nutritionist –Public Health and Adult Home Attendant – Part-time.  Due to legal and contractual requirements, the positions cannot be eliminated until more than seven weeks after the budget becomes effective.

At the meeting, the legislators will vote on setting a public hearing date for an amendment to a local law dealing with delinquent tax payment installments. The suggested date for the hearing is Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:05 p.m. The update to the local law would extend the provision allowing a five percent down payment of delinquent taxes until December 31, 2013. If the measure is not approved, then the amount required for down payment would revert to 20 percent.
