FLORAL PARK, NY — A Queens Village man has been arrested in Floral Park after police said he scammed a 77-year-old woman out of thousands of dollars by telling her that her granddaughter had been involved in a crash and needed bail money.

A stranger called the woman Wednesday and said her granddaughter needed $9,800 for bail after she'd been involved in a wreck, police said. They arranged to have the man at her home, where she forked over the cash.

On Friday, the woman received another call asking for an additional $19,000. The caller said a judge ordered payment for medical treatment for someone who was injured. That's when the woman became suspicious and called Floral Park police.
