The New Hyde Park 15U Bluedevils, finished the 2013 summer baseball season with an impressive 13-0 victory over the Smithtown Bulls to finish with a 20-4 record.
It was a total team effort and all 11 players contributed to the early morning win. After two scoreless innings, the Bluedevils broke out on top in the third. Matt Gorman started the mini rally with a hit, Dylan Savarese walked to put runners on first and second. Niko Rullo's single drove home Gorman who slide under the tag for the first run. With runners on the corners, Kyle Cajigas ground out plated the second run, then John Hayes walked and Anthony Pomara drilled a double into the gap to drive home both runners for an early 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, Ray Close walked, stole second and on the errant throw went all the way from first to home to score the fifth run. In the fifth the Bluedevils broke open the game with an 8 run inning.
Back-to-back singles by Gorman and Savarese started the inning, followed by Rullo's walk, Cajigas reached on an infield error to drive home Gorman. Hayes singled for another run, Pomara walked, and Brandon LaFroscia and Close drew back to back walks with the bases loaded for two more runs, then Mike Thornton drove a line drive double to right for two more.
Vincent Balletta finished the scoring driving home Close with the eighth run in the inning. Kyle Cajigas pitched a masterful game, going five innings, giving up one hit, three walks and striking out nine for the win.
Doug Obidienzo played brilliant defense at first base to preserve the shutout.
The Bluedevils will open up at home at Memorial Park on Wednesday August 7 in the first round of the playoffs.
