Sportloft Switches Locations in New Hyde Park

Specialty sports store reopens in new location at 1001 Jericho Turnpike.

It would be easy for the owners of Sportloft, the specialty sports equipment store in New Hyde Park, to move to a new location. After all they had done it before. However, the family-owned business decided that their new location – their fourth overall – would still be within the village, just a couple of store fronts down to 1001 Jericho Turnpike.

“This has been our fourth move since 1981 and I believe it will be our final move because we have found the perfect location,” said Brian McGuire, who runs the business with his son, Matthew and associate, Joe Richter. “This location allows us to service our customers more quickly and efficiently because its structure gives us more room to work with. It was just a better opportunity for us.”

The sporting goods store, which specializes in team sales, uniform design, athletic equipment and clothing, has been in business since 1981. They moved in March of this year from their old location at 1105 Jericho Turnpike. Previously they were housed at the corner of South 12th Street and Jericho Turnpike.

The new building located at the corner of 10th Street and Jericho Turnpike has its entire service area located in the same vicinity and is also streamlined with the latest computer technology.

“In our last store the service area was broken up into different sections, making it harder for us and for our customers,” McGuire said. “We are also up to date in our computer software programs thanks to my son Matt who helped bring new technology to the service end of our business.”

McGuire says that also among the new amenities the business can offer is laser engraving and computerized embroidery and printing.

Matthew, who recently completed a tour in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been part of the business since the mid 1980’s along with Richter.

“With Matt’s technological skills and Joe’s relationships with our long term customers we have a great thing going here,” the elder McGuire said. “We’ve had a very positive response from our customers about our new appearance and the products we carry. We love serving this community and the surrounding communities and hope to serve them in this location for another forty years.”

Sportloft is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed on all major holidays.
