2 Iona Prep Athletes Commit To NCAA Schools On 'National Signing Day'

The players continue a legacy of standout Gael football players signing with well-known and respected college programs.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona Preparatory School celebrated National Signing Day in style, recogizing the latest players to announce their college plans.

An ESPN-style National Signing Day event last week marked the occasion.

The ceremonies at the Tully Gym on Dec. 20, included remarks by Athletic Director Ryan Mahoney, Varsity and Football Head Coach Joe Spagnolo with proud parents, teachers, and fellow students watching remotely on LocalLive.

Zakar Morris, of Wappingers Falls, committed to attend and play football at the University at Albany. The 17-year-old is a standout defensive tackle/nose guard for the Gaels. Morris had interest and offers from New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Wagner Stony Brook, UMASS and LIU.

He played 4 years of football and was a member of the varsity football team that reached the CHSFL Championship game two years in a row. He was team captain this season and named to the All League, All County 1st Team Defense.

Morris is a member of the African American Society, Human Rights Club and the International Relations Club.

Jaylin Hicks, of Harlem, committed to attend and play football for the University of Minnesota. The 17-year-old is a starting defensive lineman. Hicks had offers and interests from powerhouse programs, including Penn State, Wake Forest, Boston College, Temple University, Syracuse University and UConn.

Hicks played 4 years of football at Iona Prep and was three-year varsity starter. He was on the 2021 CHSFL & Catholic New York State Championship football team and the Varsity Team that reached the CHSFL finals the last 2 seasons. He is a 3 Star recruit and was named football All-League.

Hicks will graduate with a 3.1 GPA and is a member of the African American Society.
