9 Sound Shore Beaches Ordered Closed To Swimmers Friday & Saturday

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Heavy rains on Friday morning have negatively affected water quality at some of the most popular beaches in the Hudson Valley.

Nine Sound Shore beaches in Westchester County have been closed for Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19, due in part to 1.17 inches of rainfall Friday morning, according to the Westchester County Department of Health.

The county's Beach Surveillance Program is designed to protect the public from illnesses associated with swimming in waters that are contaminated.

Due to recent excessive rainfall, the following beaches are closed:

• Harbor Island Beach (Mamaroneck)
• Beach Point Club (Mamaroneck)
• Orienta Beach Club (Mamaroneck)
• Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht Club (Mamaroneck)
• Coveleigh Club (Rye)
• Hudson Park Beach (New Rochelle)
• Davenport Club (New Rochelle)
• Greentree Club (New Rochelle)
• Surf Club (New Rochelle)

Heavy rainfall in the watershed of the Mamaroneck River impacts the water quality in Mamaroneck Harbor. Similarly, Echo Bay in New Rochelle is affected which impacts Hudson Park Beach and the Echo Bay Yacht Club.

Decisions to close beaches are based on the number of inches of rain in the watershed. Heavy rains and discharges from stormwater drains may result in high levels of harmful bacteria that may cause illness.

In addition, the following beaches are closed until further notice due to an observed harmful algae bloom within the regulated swim area:

• Mohegan Colony Association Beach, Yorktown
• Mohegan Beach Park District, Yorktown
• Lake Purdy’s P.O.A. Beach, Somers (T)
