Confirmed Case Of Mosquito-Borne West Nile Virus Found In Westchester Patient
The department of health plans to evaluate the nearby area for standing water around the Yonkers man's home and nearby catch basins.
YONKERS, NY — Westchester County health officials have confirmed the first positive human case of West Nile Virus this year.
A Yonkers man has tested positive for the potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease, according to the Westchester County Department of Health.
"This first case of West Nile Virus should remind all of us to remove standing water around our homes every time after it rains, and use repellents when we spend time outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active," Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said.

The Westchester County Department of Health will evaluate the nearby area for standing water around the patient's home and nearby catch basins, and treat those with larvicide as needed, Amler said.
Throughout the season, the health department traps and tests mosquitoes to track the presence of viruses they carry.

West Nile Virus most often causes a mild or moderate flu-like illness, but can be more serious, especially for people age 65 and older, and those with underlying medical conditions, according to public health officials.
Public health officials said homeowners should take this opportunity to walk around their property and remove any standing water to prevent mosquitos from breeding. Flower pot drip trays, kiddie pools, play equipment and other items left outdoors provide ready breeding grounds for potentially disease carrying mosquitos. Anyone who notices large areas of standing water on public property should report them to the Westchester County Health Department at 914-813-5000.
