Fiery I-95 Construction Zone Crash Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured In New Rochelle

The collision involving two trucks happened just after midnight Tuesday morning, according to New York State Police.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A fiery crash on the New England Thruway left one person dead and another injured.

On Tuesday, at 12:03 a.m., troopers assigned to the State Police New Rochelle barracks responded to a report of a two-vehicle personal injury auto accident on I-95 southbound at mile marker 6.1 in New Rochelle.

The crash closed both northbound and southbound lanes on the New England Thruway while first responders tried to save a life. The investigation and cleanup stretched into the morning rush hour.

An investigation by the Hawthorne Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Troop K's Collision Reconstruction Unit found that a 2026 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that was traveling south in the right lane had slowed down due to the construction zone with a lane closure. A 2016 Hino box truck struck the rear of the slowed Peterbilt.

After the collision, the Hino truck became fully engulfed in flames, according to troopers.

The driver of the Hino was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

State police said that the victim's identity will not be released until family can be notified.
