Flash Flood Emergency Issued For Westchester County

"This is a life threatening situation. Seek higher ground now!"

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A flash flood emergency has been declared for southern Westchester County.

"This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!" the National Weather Service says.

The flash flood warning is in effect until 11:30 p.m.

At 9:28 p.m., doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain have already fallen and up to 5 additional inches is possible over the next hour.

Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order, the weather service says.

"Flash flood emergencies are a rare alert issued by the National Weather Service that should not only grab your attention, but also serve as a signal that you're likely in imminent danger," weather.com says.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect until 10:30 p.m. A tornado watch expires at 1 a.m.
