Overnight Freeze Warning For Southern Parts Of Westchester: NWS

The weekend might have offered a perfect beach day, but an unceremonious return to autumn weather in the area will see temps as low as 29.

SOUTHERN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — The good news is that if you still have a Jack-o'-lantern on the front porch, it isn't in danger of rotting. The bad news is freezing temps won't be good for vulnerable outdoor plants.

Areas in and around the Sound Shore will likely see freezing weather overnight, but you still have time to protect vulnerable outdoor plants.

The National Weather Service issued a Freeze Warning that is in effect from late tonight through Thursday morning in southern Westchester.

"Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 expected," the weather service said.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, according to the NWS.

Since the frost could kill sensitive outdoor plants if left uncovered, the NWS recommends taking steps as soon as possible to protect tender plants from the cold.

To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly, according to the weather service. The NWS also advises draining in-ground sprinkler systems and covering above-ground pipes to protect from freezing.
