See Which Westchester Beaches Were Permitted To Reopen
Earlier in the week, runoff from recent heavy rains caused many area beaches to close indefinitely, but fun in the sun is returning.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — As of 1:30 p.m. on August 10, several popular swimming spots were allowed to reopen.
Earlier in the week, several area beaches were closed until further notice by the Westchester County Department of Health, due to heavy rains and the resulting runoff negatively affecting water quality.
The county's Beach Surveillance Program is designed to protect the public from illnesses associated with swimming in waters that are contaminated.

The following beaches were allowed to reopen as of 1:30 p.m. on August 10:
- Hudson Park, East & West (New Rochelle)
- Surf Club (New Rochelle)
- Harbor Island (Mamaroneck)
- Orienta Beach (Mamaroneck)
- Coveleigh Club (Rye)
- American Yacht Club (Rye)
- Rye Town Park Beach
- Playland Beach (Rye)
- Philipse Manor Beach Club (Hudson River)
Heavy rainfall in the watershed of the Mamaroneck River impacts the water quality in Mamaroneck Harbor. Similarly, Echo Bay in New Rochelle is affected which impacts Hudson Park Beach and the Echo Bay Yacht Club.

Decisions to close beaches are based on the number of inches of rain in the watershed. Heavy rains and discharges from stormwater drains may result in high levels of harmful bacteria that may cause illness.
The following beaches are still closed until further notice due to an observed harmful algae bloom within the regulated swim area:
- Mohegan Colony Association Beach, Yorktown
- Mohegan Beach Park District, Yorktown
- Lake Purdy’s P.O.A. Beach, Somers (T)
