Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins to Address LWV Luncheon April 21

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization aimed at engaging citizens in improving government at all levels.

From the Office of the Senator: As increased interest in civic affairs sweeps the country, New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will address “Political and Policy Issues on National and State Levels of Government” at the League of Women Voters’ Annual Luncheon on Friday, April 21, at noon, at the Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck, NY.

The luncheon is sponsored by local chapters of the League of Women Voters, including those of Larchmont-Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Rye, Rye Brook and Port Chester, and Harrison.

Andrea Stewart-Cousins has a long history of public service. A New York State Senator since 2006, she has been the leader of the New York Senate Democratic Conference since 2012, the first woman elected to that position. When her party was in the majority, in 2009, she was the first African American woman to preside over the Senate.

Senator Stewart-Cousins represents District 35, which covers Greenburgh and parts of White Plains, New Rochelle, Yonkers and Scarsdale. From 1996-2016, she was a Westchester County Legislator. In 1992, she became the first African American to serve as Director of Community Affairs for the City of Yonkers.

According to her NY Senate biography, “Senator Stewart-Cousins is a strong advocate for human rights; quality education; accessible and affordable health care; and making government more efficient, transparent and accountable to all citizens. Her belief that creating change locally affects changes on the State level has driven her legislative and policy agenda at home and in Albany.”

Given her leadership role, Senator Stewart-Cousins is in a unique position to offer insight into both politics and policy at various levels of government, the topic she will address at the luncheon and a perennial interest of the League of Women Voters.

The LWV is a non-partisan organization aimed at engaging citizens in improving government at all levels. Proceeds from the annual luncheon benefit the local chapters and allow them to continue such activities as moderating local candidates’ debates, developing voter guides, registering new voters and hosting panels on local questions.
