Special Weather Statement Issued By NWS For Most Of The Hudson Valley

A front moving through the region brought more snow and ice than forecasters anticipated. Treacherous roads have led to dozens of crashes.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Officials across the Hudson Valley are urging motorists to stay off the roads, if possible, and the National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement.

Forecasters originally called for trace amounts of snow in the Hudson Valley, but conditions were far more treacherous that expected in many areas.

A special weather statement from the NWS is in effect for most of the region, including Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess and Ulster counties.

In Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties, slippery travel is expected through the evening commute and into this evening, according to the NWS. Light snow will continue through 3 p.m. Most roads remain wet, but a few may briefly become covered with snow. Temperatures remain below freezing across the region so any untreated surfaces may become icy and slick into the evening commute.

In northern areas, a period of light snow will continue across the Southeast Catskills and the Mid-Hudson Valley. Although snowfall amounts will be light, a coating to less than one inch, the cold ground surfaces may lead to locally slippery travel conditions, especially on untreated roads. Areas closest to I-84 will have the best chance for light accumulating snow.
