"She is still here, waiting."

NORTH FORK, NY — Violet, a sweet pup without a home, has spent 1,125 days in the shelter system.

And perplexed animal advocates who've fallen for her big eyes and loving spirit just can't understand why.

"We cannot figure out why Violet has spent that many days in a shelter. Other than obviously being beautiful and having unique markings on her nose, she is an overall great dog," staff at the League, located in Peconic, wrote on Facebook. "One of our volunteers had transported her to us from another shelter on the island in November. We hoped that this would help get a new set of eyes on her, and help her find her forever home. But she is still here waiting."

According to Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at the League, Violet is a mixed breed, about five or six years old, and 60 lbs.

"She is a mature, highly affectionate girl. She is quiet, sleeps through the night and is good with people. Another one of our volunteers welcomed her into his home to help us learn more about her and he had nothing but good things to say," staffers said. "Please give Violet a chance."

Stroup said Violet originally came from the Brookhaven animal shelter. "She has been in the shelter system since 2021. She is a great dog. Gentle, sweet. She's house-trained. She will make an amazing companion for someone."

Reflecting on Violet, Stroup added: "She's just a super special dog who has been overlooked for way too long. We put her in our playgroups and she just became a totally different dog. She loves playing with other dogs and has even become our go-to dog to test other dogs. Someone will be so lucky to have her. I can't imagine why she has not been adopted."

Stroup's heart breaks for Violet.

"This dog is the best. She deserves a family. Please don’t make her wait any longer," she said.
