Dog's Body Found In Suitcase On Greenport Trail: Police

An 18-year-old found the dog's body last week, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — The decomposed body of a dog was found in a suitcase on a Greenport trail, police said.

According to Southold Town police, on January 7, a 53-year-old Greenport man reported that his son, 18, had been walking near Kaplan Avenue and North Street in Greenport, down Monsell Trail, and found the dog's body about a week earlier. An officer responded and also found the suitcase, police said.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the incident had previously been reported on December 8; Greenport Village had been notified, police said.

Police also contacted the ASPCA, who stated that "due to the incident not possessing any investigative leads of either camera footage or a witness the ASPCA would not be conducting an investigation," police said.

The ASPCA then advised they would recontact the officer at another time, police said.

The officer also called The League, Southold's animal shelter; the dog was successfuly scanned for a chip, police said. Shelter officials said the chip was not registered.

The League said they would take the dog's body and try to learn more; at this time, no further information was immediately available, police said.
