According to the Greenport Fire Department's rescue squad, on Saturday, Feb. 8, a call came in at 10:38 p.m., during a snowstorm. CPR was in progress on a baby boy, 1, with CPR instructions being given, officials said.

According to Sam Strickland, Jr., about a dozen members of the rescue squad, as well as Southold Town Police Officer Patrick Anderson, arrived at the Greenport home within minutes.

Anderson and rescue squad members saw the baby's father actively performing CPR on his infant son, officials said. Anderson set up the AED; the father passed the baby to Strickland, who checked for a pulse but found none, he said. He then began chest compressions and heard the baby begin to breathe faintly. Next, he flipped the baby onto his stomach and administered two back slaps, he said.

"To my relief, the baby began breathing on his own, every breath getting stronger and stronger," Strickland said.

Medics from Stony Brook University Hospital arrived and transported the baby to Eastern Long Island Hospital, he said.

"I am grateful for the teamwork shown during this life-saving effort and proud of our quick response, which contributed to the positive outcome for the child," Strickland said.
