Man Drove Drunk Without A Tire, Crashed Into Sign: Police

GREENPORT, NY — A Mattituck man was arrested after he drove while intoxicated, hit a sign and drove without a tire, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place Sunday on County Route 48 in Greenport. William Edgett, 54, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWI, police said.

Southold police said a call came in about the driver of a white Ford pickup truck hitting a sign. Edgett then fled westbound on County Route 48; he was seen driving west with no front passenger side tire, police said.

He was stopped on County Route 48 near Carroll Avenue in Peconic, police said. Edgett was found to be intoxicated, arrested, transported to Southold Town police headquarters for processing, and held for morning arraignment, police said.
