Man Nabbed Trying To Paint Green Line On Street For St. Pat's: Police

NORTH FORK, NY — Irish eyes were not smiling recently when a Greenport man was arrested after he tried to paint a green line down the street in advance of St. Patrick's Day.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place on March 16 at 12:52 p.m. on Front Street in Greenport. Police received reports of a white pickup truck blocking traffic in the area of Front and 6th Streets in Greenport, with a man painting the roadway, police said.

STPD then saw a white pickup truck stopped in the middle of the double yellow line on Front Street and a man painting the center double yellow line with green paint, police said.

Robert Lehmann, 73, stated that he wanted to prepare the roadway for a St. Patrick's Day parade; Lehmann also said that he had not gotten permission from anyone at Greenport Village Hall to paint the road, police said.

Lehmann was arrested, charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, processed and released on an appearance ticket for a later court date, police said.
