Dozens of boats scoured the bay bottom Monday morning during the first day of the scallop harvest.

It's that crazy time of year again for local baymen and fish markets: started with a bang

Charlie Manwaring of was out there pulling his dredge for hours with about 500 other baymen spread out across local waters from Orient Harbor to the Shinnecock Bay.

Manwaring said he easily harvested 10 bushels of the delectable shellfish out of Southold Bay — the state limit — and has high hopes for the rest of the season, which ends March 31. He said he's spending the rest of Monday afternoon and into the night processing about 200 bushels of scallops from his and other baymen's harvests.

"I'll probably be here until midnight," he said.
