Power Restored To 28K+ Across North Fork

The outage was reportedly caused by a crash, officials say. Officials were firing up Greenport's generators in case of a prolonged outage.

NORTH FORK, NY — Power was restored Thursday afternoon after an outage plunged the North Fork into darkness earlier in the day.

"Our crews responded this morning to a motor vehicle accident impacting more than 28,000 customers across the North and South Fork of Long Island. Thanks to their hard work, all customers now have power," PSEL Long Island told Patch at 2:36 p.m.

Southold Town Police Chief Steve Grattan said that according to the PSEG outage map, power had been out sine 10:30 a.m. from Peconic, heading east to Orient. As of noon, more than 30,000 customers were without power.

Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupsi said as of 12:29 p.m., some power had been restored; Town Hall facilities once again had service.

A box truck struck one of the large telephone poles on Route 48 near Kennys Road, Grattan said. Route 48 is detoured at Ackerly Pond Lane and Tuckers Lane, he said.

The driver suffered minor injuries, Grattan added.

Greenport Village Mayor Kevin Steussi said the outage was caused by the crash. He said the village power plant had initiated firing up the generators. "That is in process out of an abundance of caution, not knowing how long the outage could last. The act of generating power off these large units isn’t immediate, but we are working towards it," he said.

According to Greenport Village Clerk Candace Hall, the whole village was out of power as of 11 a.m.

"We are aware of the outages. There was a motor vehicle accident impacting a transmission circuit, while additional scheduled maintenance outages were ongoing. We are actively working to restore the power back as quickly and safely as possible," said Katy Tatzel, director of communications for PSEG Long Island.
