FEATURED EVENT: Rotary Fundraiser for Disabled Greenport Man

Despite not being able to walk his entire life due to celebral palsy, 40-year-old Greenport resident Harry Lewis lives an active life, taking the bus to work at Suffolk Community College and getting around his house — where he’s lived alone since his parents died a few years ago.

But his friends, co-workers and neighbors want to make it easier on Harry when he moves around his home by making it handicapped accessible. They’ll have a chance on April 17, when the Greenport Rotary Club and will host a “Locals for Spaghetti Dinner” — a fundraiser for “The Harry Project,” a community initiative to help Lewis.

“For a guy faced with the challenges he has, his attitude is unbelievably good,” said Craig Richter, who has replaced a broken door to Lewis’s house with financial help from Rotary. “We really need to help this guy.”

Members of “The Harry Project” are finalizing plans with local architects and will employ local contractors and suppliers who are donating as much of their services as possible to do the work.

“It’s important to us to be involved on a personal level,” said Eileen Solomon, Greenport Rotary's president. “Rotary members will be cooking, busing tables and dishing up the meals. Claudio’s Restaurant is a great venue for a great cause. We are asking the public’s support for our friend and neighbor Harry.”

The fundraiser will take place on April 17 from 12 to 8 p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets are $18 person, $12 for seniors and children under 12. Take out is also available.
