Shelter Island Home Badly Damaged By Fire Day Before Christmas Eve
Two residents escaped safely, police say.
SHELTER ISLAND, NY — One day before Christmas Eve, a Shelter Island home was badly damaged by fire, police said.
According to Shelter Island police, the fire broke out Monday at about 6:35 a.m. Shelter Island Town police, fire and EMS responded to the reported residential structure fire on West Neck Road.
Two occupants of the home were safely outside while the fire raged within, police said.

The Shelter Island Fire Department was assisted by the Greenport and Sag Harbor Fire Departments; the home sustained extensive damage, police said.
One firefighter was treated at the scene and was subsequently released; no other injuries were reported, police said.

The Shelter Island Police Department, along with the Suffolk County Police Department's arson squad, is investigating; the fire is believed to be non-criminal in nature, police said.
