SOUTHOLD, NY — Just days before Memorial Day, the Southold American Legion had damage due to a crash on the property.

According to Denise Schlachter of the Southold American Legion - Griswold Terry Glover Post 803 Auxiliary, a crash early Saturday damaged the sign outside the Legion, located on Main Road, as well as the beloved Poppy Garden, created each year to honor the nation's heroes.

"Our Post 803 worked very hard for a long time to raise the funds needed to get our new sign," she said. "Three years ago, we finally reached our goal. Well, early this morning there was an accident. Not only did the sign take a hit, so did the guard rail, and our beautiful Poppy Garden."

She added: "We thank God that no one was hurt. Our sign, lawn, guard rail and poppies can be fixed. We will rebuild."

Schlachter said insurance should cover costs to repair the sign, "but we are not 100 percent sure. Any and all repairs and expenses to the building are paid for by fundraising, donations, and hall rentals — and sometimes we are able to get grants. Most of the work that needs to be done is done by members and community volunteers."

She added: "All donations will be appreciated and used appropriately."
