What Our Readers Think: Trump's Plan to Buy Plum Island

Add to the conversation by posting your thoughts in the comment section.

Real estate mogul and billionaire Donald Trump wants to buy the 840-acre Plum Island and build a world-class golf course. He made his intentions known earlier this week, starting talks with area officials, who have said a golf course on Plum Island is against zoning regulations.

The island is set to be auctioned off by 2020 when the Federal Government moves its animal and disease center, which has been on Plum Island for 59 years, to Kansas.

Patch readers, however, aren't too keen on the idea of Donald Trump moving in and made their thoughts clear on North Fork Patch's Facebook page.

The following is a round-up of their comments. Feel free to add to the conversation by posting your thoughts in the comment section below.

Chatty Allen NO NO & NO!!!! KEEP Trump OUT OF HERE!!!!

Bob Corwin Let's fight to keep the jobs instead of worrying about who is gonna buy it!

Richard Walker I don't think the Plum Island golf course is a big enough project to cement his name on the north fork, perhaps he can add a memorial bridge, sky tram or perhaps a tunnel.....all hype to keep his name in the press.

Laura Pearsall How about if they house the sex offenders there? What we don't need is another playground for the rich.

Marion A. Terry Can you imagine all the services Southold town would be expected to provide to those spoiled riches? Plus all the poisons needed to keep the greens green. Bad idea.

Andrew Cunliffe You put a golf course out there with all the pesticides and fertilizers they use. In the middle of some of the best fishing areas is totally stupid. The run off from the island would screw up the waters. Leave it the hell alone. I say save the jobs first.

William Henry As tragic as it is for those who have jobs on Plum Island, the move to Kansas is inevitable. However, if Trump were to build his golf course, there would be an incredible amount of year-round job opportunities for those in our community. Plus it would boost our local economy.

Adam Sotiryadis leave Plum Island as wildlife preserve. Post WWII it was a remote instalation now it's time to move the lab. In the 80's the island lost power & crisis was narrowly avoided. No disrespect to the scientist but get the lab far away.

Now it's your turn. Do you think Donald Trump should buy Plum Island and build a golf course?
