Woman Hospitalized After Flipping Car on Mattituck Tracks

Greenport woman was taken to the hospital after LIRR crossing light pole.

A 23-year-old Greenport woman was taken to on May 10 at 9:48 a.m. hitting a railroad crossing pole and flipping her car in Mattituck, police said.

Shalah M. Smith was operating a 1990 Ford north on Factory Avenue and turned her head away from the road in order to locate the origin of a unusual noise her vehicle was making, police said. When she turned back, her vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a Long Island Railroad crossing light pole, police said. The collision caused Smith's vehicle to overturn and come to rest on the railroad tracks, and the impact knocked over the crossing gate.

Smith was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and was ticketed for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation due to a suspension of her drivers license, police said. Metropolitan Transit Authority Police responded.
