Northport, NY…October 2025…Each week since 2015, food-insecure families served by the Northport-East Northport Ecumenical Lay Council (ELC) Food Pantry have been enjoying a variety of bagels donated by Mo’s Bagels & Deli at 707 Fort Salonga Rd. in Northport and Mo’s Bagels at 75 Broadway in Greenlawn. Doing the math, co-owners Mo and Ada Martinez figure that their stores have provided the pantry with a whopping 100,000 bagels—an average of almost 200 per week.

“On behalf of the nearly 170 clients we help each month, I thank Mo’s Bagels for their consistent dedication and generosity,” said Deacon Donna Galluccio, President of the ELC. “This kind of support from local businesses keeps our community healthy and strong—and helps our clients feel loved!”

Northport resident Michael Koenig, a retired science teacher from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, collects the donations in a a large bin two mornings a week and brings them to the pantry. He has kept that charitable routine up for 12 years, starting before the Martinezes took over Cinderella Bagels at the Northport location and renamed it.

Over the past 10 years, the Martinezes have expanded their generosity by donating to the VA Hospital in Northport and to the local chapter of Food Rescue US, Inc., a nationwide charitable grassroots organization that salvages leftovers from stores and restaurants.

A member agency of Long Island Cares (The Harry Chapin Food Bank), the ELC Food Pantry is housed at the First Presbyterian Church, 330 Main Street, Northport. Founded in 1974 as a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit all-volunteer charitable organization, the ELC assumed administration of the food pantry, which had been established in 1950. The pantry provides a wide variety of food, toiletries, and other essentials to food-insecure families residing within Northport, East Northport, Centerport, and Greenlawn. Through the generosity of many, the pantry serves approximately 170 area families each month. Clients can visit the pantry once each week.
