Cranberry Day Brings STEM Learning To Elwood Students
Students explored science in a Thanksgiving-themed lesson.
ELWOOD, NY— Third graders at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in Elwood turned Thanksgiving week into a hands-on STEM adventure during the school’s annual Cranberry Day celebration on Nov. 21, teacher Liz Held said.
Students spent the morning rotating through cranberry-themed STEM stations in each third-grade classroom, where they explored scientific inquiry, engineering, and math skills through interactive challenges.
Activities included building cranberry catapults, experimenting with cranberry juice, designing floating “cargo rafts,” and making craisins “dance” in cups of soda to observe buoyancy.

“Cranberry Day is a fun way to celebrate Thanksgiving while giving kids real hands-
on STEM learning,” Held said. “It’s amazing how much they can discover from one little
cranberry. They’re building, testing, experimenting and truly thinking like scientists. It’s a
day that blends seasonal fun with meaningful learning, which is the best kind of school
day.”
