Northport Residents Asked to Clear Hydrants

Officials say digging out hydrants now can help ensure safety in the event of a fire.

The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council is asking residents to clear snow from fire hydrants near their homes, which can help in the event of a fire.

With the recent snowstorms that have hit the area – and more snow in the forecast – many fire hydrants have become buried in snow. This can pose a problem for the fire department’s water supply should a fire occur, officials say. In a fire, seconds count, and the sooner that firefighters can reach a hydrant, the quicker they can extinguish the fire.

Residents are advised to clear a three-foot radius around the hydrant and maintain a clear path to the street, as shown on the diagram.
