More Rain Coming, More Flooding Possible In the Lower Hudson Valley

The region has already received more than twice as much rain as usual in December. The NWS has issued a hazardous outlook.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A quick moving storm system due to hit our region late Wednesday will bring up to an inch of rain, the National Weather Service predicts.

A hazardous outlook has been issued for Rockland and Westchester counties because, with stream flows and soil moisture still running high, there is potential for minor flood stages to be reached along a few to several quick responding streams in the region if the high end of the rainfall forecast is reached, the NWS said.

The worst-case scenario: 1.5 to 2 inches.

Already this month, the lower Hudson Valley has received 6-8 inches of rain and the mid-Hudson has received 7-9 inches, according to New York State Mesonet. The average rainfall in December for the region is 3 inches. Rain washed out successive waves of scheduled holiday events.

Then on Thursday the unseasonable warmth — who wants fog instead of snow? — will peak, with highs up into the 50s before dropping for New Year's.

"As of Dec. 26th, temperatures this month have been 3-6 degrees above the historical average throughout the Northeast," said Renee Duff, AccuWeather meteorologist.
