It was stopped on the shoulder to help a tow truck operator with a disabled vehicle.

NYACK, NY — New York State Police have identified the driver of the cargo van who was killed in a crash on I-87 in Rockland County on Friday as Bronx resident Arnold Sanchez.

The crash happened before 7 a.m. between exits 11 and 12, near mile marker 17.6 in Nyack.

A disabled vehicle was on the left shoulder, partially in the left lane. It was being loaded onto a tow truck by Congers Collision and a New York State Thruway Wrecker was providing traffic control.

Police said apparently the 60-year-old, who was driving a 2017 Ram ProMaster van, rear-ended the Thruway Wrecker at a high rate of speed.

The Wrecker was unoccupied at the time, police said, as the driver was assisting with the disabled vehicle.
