South Orangetown Schools To Discuss Student Privacy, Data Dashboard

South Orangetown Central School District Superintendent Dr. Ken Mitchell will include an issue of student privacy in his report during the district board of education meeting 7:30 p.m. tonight in room 165 of the middle school.

The neighboring Pearl River School District recently opted out of the federal Race to the Top grant program due to concerns regarding the data dashboard employed by a private company to display and share student information submitted to the state. According to the agenda for Thursday's SOCSD meeting, Mitchell will speak about the data dashboard. The full agenda is available on the district website here

The data dashboard and student privacy is one of three topics listed under the superintendent's report. The others are:

  • Tappan Zee Elementary -- Addressing Academic Diversity: Strengths, Gaps & Differences
  • Demographics/Space Configuration

Last month, Mitchell recommended changes to the configuration of grade levels at the district's elementary schools due to drops in enrollment and efforts to be more efficient. The plan includes closing Tappan Zee Elementary School, at least temporarily, as of 2015-16. It was chosen because it is the smallest of the three elementary school buildings in the district.

The change would have grades K-2 at William O. Schaeffer Elementary School in 2014-15. Third grade students would remain at Tappan Zee Elemenatry  Starting with the 2015-16 school year, students in grades 3-6 would attend Cottage Lane Elementary.
