Tappan Zee Softball Advances, Baseball Eliminated

The Tappan Zee softball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 15-0 victory at home against Port Chester in the Section 1 Class A quarterterfinals Thursday. 

No. 3 Tappan Zee will play at No. 2 Ursuline Friday in the semifinals with a berth in Saturday's championship game at North Rockland on the line.

The Dutchies sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and did not record an out until the first seven hitters reached.

Meagan Trozzo went 3-for-4 with two-run home run, her first at the varsity level, a triple, four runs scored and four RBI. Shortstop Dee Sinanaj was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI and Kelly Connolly was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Chrissy Ryan brought Kaitlin Quirk home with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to bring the mercy rule into effect and end the game. 

Winning pitcher Paulina Gutkin and Cassy Leone combined to throw a no-hitter. Gutkin struck out seven in three innings. 

While the softball team advanced, the Tappan Zee baseball team's season ended with a 13-3 loss at home against Beacon.

Patrick Schetter contributed four of Beacon's 14 hits, including three doubles and a single, and drove in five runs. He also earned the victory, giving up three runs in four innings.

Tappan Zee, which had been the top seed in the Section 1 Class A playoffs, completed its season with a 15-8 record.
