OSSINING/CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY — If you’re like many of your Ossining/Croton-on-Hudson neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Here are eight local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  • Croton-Cortlandt Food Pantry: "Our mission is to help to alleviate hunger among families and individuals whose income is insufficient for their needs."
  • Croton Free Library: "to encourage the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas and the pursuit of lifelong learning for the children and adults of our community. Books, media, and state-of-the-art technology help us provide free and equal access to knowledge, information, and a wide range of artistic expression. The Library serves as a gathering place and learning center for Croton residents, with dynamic cultural and educational programs, and space for community organizations to meet."
  • Croton Harmon Education Foundation: "For twenty years, CHEF has seeded innovative and creative initiatives that have lasting value across the Croton Harmon School District."
  • Neighbors Link (Mount Kisco, Ossining, Yonkers): "The Neighbors Link mission is to strengthen the whole community through the healthy integration of immigrants. Our mission is achieved by filling a service gap for new immigrant families, offering education and empowerment programs, involving longer-term residents in volunteer opportunities and creating substantive partnerships with other local organizations. Our strategies to educate, empower and employ families include a Worker Center, English as a Second Language (ESL) education, legal services and advocacy, workforce development, parent education, early childhood programs and academic support for school-age children of immigrants."

  • Ossining Library Foundation: "provides the library with funds for programs, service enhancements, and capital projects, over and above the regular operating budget. The Foundation is building a permanent endowment to ensure the future success of the library."
  • Ossining Matters Education Foundation: "Our mission is to support and enrich the learning opportunities for all children in the Ossining School District by providing funding for projects that go beyond the scope of the school district budget."
  • Riverkeeper (Ossining): "protects and restores the Hudson River from source to sea and safeguards drinking water supplies, through advocacy rooted in community partnerships, science and law."
