After Recent Jump In Bear Sightings, Police Offer Tips And Resources
June is breeding time for the bears, who are considered "transient occupants of Westchester County," by conservation officials.
CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY — The Village of Croton-on-Hudson Police Department reports that it has received an increasing number of black bear sighting reports over the past few weeks.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), black bears are "transient occupants of Westchester County," and their movement tends to increase in June as breeding season begins and young bears look to find their own spaces.
While black bears are usually not dangerous to humans, they may become so if they become conditioned to human presence, or feel threatened.

Police say there are several ways that residents can make their property less attractive to bears:
- Remove bird feeders. Bird feed such as suet and seeds are a very strong attraction for bears, even if they can't reach them.
- Garbage is extremely attractive to bears! It should always be kept in sealed garbage cans inside a sturdy building like a garage or shed. Anything with an odor can attract a bear. It’s recommended to take out trash just before your scheduled pickup.
- Remove the grease can from grills after every use. Turn the grill on "High" for several minutes after you are done cooking to burn residual odors off the grill.
- Do not place food, including pet food, outside to attract wildlife. Any food items used to attract or feed birds, squirrels, or other wildlife will also attract bears.
