Croton-Harmon Fifth-Graders Visit Teatown

Students from Croton-Harmon's Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School used Teatown Lake Reservation as a model ecosystem.

From Croton-Harmon School District: Fifth-grade students from Croton-Harmon’s Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School used Teatown Lake Reservation as a model ecosystem to demonstrate the interactions of the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere during a recent trip.

During the past week, each class visited Teatown, a nonprofit nature preserve and environmental education center in Ossining, to supplement their learning about ecosystems.

“[Students took on] roles as geologists, biologists, hydrologists and meteorologists as they explored different aspects of Teatown’s aquatic ecosystem while utilizing a map of the lower Hudson Valley to identify the fresh and brackish water reservoirs in Croton-on-Hudson,” said fifth-grade teacher Christina Pegna. “In addition, they learned how energy flows from the sun into plants, consumers and then predators. Students also toured the lake and investigated the field and forest in greater detail.”
