Elderly Ossining Woman Loses $100K in Sweepstakes Scam

An elderly Ossining woman fell victim to an ongoing phone scam that promised her millions of dollars and a luxury car -- costing her the huge loss of about $100,000.

Ossining police are investigating a phone scam that this woman kept paying into "over a period of time," Lt. William Sullivan said. He said such scams tend to target senior citizens.

Sullivan said the woman had received notice that she would receive $5.5 million and a brand new Mercedes if only she sent money, which she did in batches that started to add up. The scammers would ask her to send money in untraceable ways -- cashier's checks, Western Union transfers, money cards -- adding up to a whopping total of $100,000 before she finally reported this to police.

"Again we urge people that if they get any call that they won money and to send money, please ignore it," Sullivan said. "If it sounds too good to be true, it is."
