End In Sight For Hudson Valley's Final September Storm

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Up to 1 more inch of rain is possible in the region before the end of the end-of-September storm, and Saturday will start off with gusty winds as well.

“Today Mother Nature has shown us unprecedented rainfall in a matter of just 24 hours, with more than seven inches of rain in parts of Brooklyn and six inches of rain for other parts of New York City,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday afternoon, adding that more rain was on the way.

The American Red Cross in Metro New York North has opened one shelter due to severe flooding in Mamaroneck. The shelter is currently open and available to individuals and families who need assistance. This shelter is operated in coordination with Westchester County Office of Emergency Management. The Red Cross is working closely with emergency management and government officials in the impacted areas.

The shelter is currently open at Mamaroneck High School, 1000 W Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, NY 10543. Individuals evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of their family, including:

  • Prescription and emergency medications
  • Foods that meet special dietary requirements
  • Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
  • Chargers for any electronic devices
  • Books, games and other forms of entertainment

JFK Airport measured 8.58 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 5 p.m., the National Weather Service reported.

Westchester was the hardest-hit county in the Hudson Valley, with more than 5 inches of rain and widespread flooding.
