Firefighters Make The Second Rope Rescue Of The Week At Croton Dam

This most recent save comes just days after first responders pulled a man from the rushing waters below the dam's spillway.

CROTON, NY — The Croton Dam is a popular Hudson Valley tourist stop, but this week. first responders have been repeat visitors.

For the second time this week, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was called to the Croton Dam park for a person in distress. And, once again, the victim required a rope-assisted rescue.

Just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department, Croton EMS, the Ossining EMS Medic and Westchester County Police were called to the dam for a teen with a leg injury on the trail leading from Route 129/Croton Dam Road down to Croton Gorge Park.

Rescuers were able to deploy a rescue rope system to send needed equipment and personnel to the patient. Crews then carefully packaged the patient in a Stokes Basket before lowering him and rescuers back down a steep and loose-soiled pathway, fire officials said.

The time of patient contact to the time the patient was packaged and being hauled back to an awaiting ambulance was roughly 10 minutes, the rescuers reported. Croton EMS took the teenage boy with non-life-threatening injuries to a local trauma center.
