Ossining Memorial Will Honor the Late Bryan Johnson

Bryan Johnson—the 26-year-old Ossining resident who perished in the waters off City Island last summer—will have a local boat ramp dedicated to him later this week.

Johnson died last June, when he was abandoned by fellow boaters.

"Bryan was the victim of a foolish prank, when after a night of swimming off a boat driven by friends, he was left to fend for himself, ultimately falling victim to drowning and found off of City Island," said a spokesperson with Senator David Carlucci's office. "The boat was driven by a young person not certified to operate a boat."

This Wednesday at 3 p.m., exactly one year after Johnson's death, Carlucci and a slate of other local politicians will gather at Ossining Boat and Canoe Club to rename the Ossining Boat Ramp the Bryan J. Johnson Memorial Boat Ramp.

Local officials and Johnson's family worked to craft new boating legislation after the death—the bill would require residents 18 years or younger to pass a certificed boating safety test before taking the wheel.

"With the summer season finally here, state and local officials, along with the family of Bryan Johnson, will urge Governor Cuomo to sign the landmark legislation into law," Carlucci's office said.
