The fifth-graders were able to become familiar with their new school during an ice cream social at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School.

From Croton-Harmon Schools:
Incoming Croton-Harmon fifth-grade students had an opportunity to connect with old friends, make new ones and become familiar with their new school during an ice cream social at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School on Aug. 29.
Seventh- and eighth-grade student ambassadors volunteered to introduce themselves to their younger peers and serve as tour guides of the school during the special event.

“I want the [fifth-graders] to become familiar with the school, and us,” said eighth- grade student Aliyah. “Middle school can be really scary – it was for me – so I want them to feel comfortable.”
In his opening remarks, Assistant Principal Michael Plotkin assured the new students there was nothing to be nervous about. He also introduced Dr. Barbara Ulm, the school’s principal, as well as school counselors Carrie Beja and Rachel Bonilla.

Before heading off on tours of the school, the ambassadors introduced themselves and shared what they love about PVC. The reasons ranged from being around friends, to the array of academic offerings and positive school environment.
Eighth-grader Patrick noted, “I love PVC because the staff is very nice.”
The student-led tours included stops in the fifth-grade wing, gymnasiums, band and chorus room, computer lab, nurse’s office and more. Afterward, several fifth-graders said they felt more ready than before for school to begin.
Following the tours, all in attendance enjoyed ice cream sundaes in the cafeteria. “We want to make you feel at home because it is your home,” said Plotkin.
