Heavy Rain, Chilly Temps: Hudson Valley Weekend

A low-pressure area could intensify into an organized tropical system and temperatures Saturday will be in the low 60s. Here's the latest.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A close-to-home tropical threat could soak the region this weekend, and the national Weather Prediction Center has put the Hudson Valley at a marginal risk of excessive rainfall.

No matter what happens, it's going to be cold. Temperatures won't rise out of the low 60s on Saturday.

A tropical depression or full-fledged tropical storm could form along the East Coast starting Friday and affect our region Saturday and Sunday, said forecasters with the National Weather Service and AccuWeather.

The culprits are a stalled front along the coast with a low-pressure area, AccuWeather explained.

Whether or not the low becomes an organized tropical system, it will bring impacts, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys said. "The storm is likely to bring gusty winds and rounds of heavy rain to much of the East Coast," he said.

The speed with which the storm moves to the northeast will determine how long the rainy weather will last, Roys explained.

"I would generally anticipate the potential for 1"-2" of rainfall over the weekend, possibly more," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook, noting the NWS had already put the region at "marginal risk"of excessive rainfall.

Furbeck said Tuesday his "compound" in Orange County had already recorded 9 inches of rain so far for September.

According to ClimateData.org, the average rainfall for September in the Hudson Valley is 4.1 inches.
