OLD WESTBURY, NY β€” The intersection of Glen Cove Road and Jericho Turnpike in Old Westbury is "one of Long Island's busiest interchanges," the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) says. On Monday, the NYSDOT announced the start of a months-long $3.8 million project to improve safety and mobility at the intersection, which sits close to a Northern State Parkway exit used by thousands of drivers per day, according to the NYSDOT.

The project will add lanes, a raised median and upgraded traffic signals to improve traffic flow. To improve pedestrian safety in the area, with its nearby shopping centers and nearby neighborhoods, the NYSDOT will install new sidewalks, curb ramps, countdown crossing timers and a raised island.

The parkway ramp will also be widened.

The raised median is designed to eliminate illegal left turns from the parkway exit ramp, along with a new turning lane from the off-ramp for Glen Cove Road northbound drivers. A new turning lane on Glen Cove Road will accommodate westbound Jericho Turnpike traffic.

"New York State is committed to making smart investments in our transportation network to enhance safety and strengthen the connections that tie our communities together,” NYSDOT Commissioner Dominguez said.
